Two Ingredient Hot Chocolate

A recipe for rich, decadent two ingredient hot chocolate using only real chocolate and whole milk! A bit of water can be added to make this simple drink a little thinner if desired.

Hot chocolate doesn’t have to be complicated or even involve a powdered mix. Two ingredient hot chocolate is simply real chocolate and whole milk warmed up enough for the chocolate to melt and swirl into the milk. A little bit of water can be added to make this two ingredient hot chocolate a bit less rich but still delicious. Not only is this recipe simple, but it is also customizable. Use a chopped up chocolate bar or chocolate chips, swap out the whole milk for a lower-fat milk or a non-dairy milk alternative. Top the hot chocolate with whipped cream, marshmallows or enjoy on its own in a giant mug all to yourself!

WHY YOU WILL LOVE TWO INGREDIENT HOT CHOCOLATE

  • There are only two ingredients in this recipe! It’s safe to say that I always have both chocolate and milk in our house. A variety of chocolates and milks can work in this recipe.
  • Endlessly customizable. You can use chocolate chips, a chopped up chocolate bar, leftover chopped up Easter or Halloween chocolate candy, melting wafers or even dairy free chocolate chips. Likewise you can use most milks or even non-dairy milk alternatives as long as you enjoy the flavor of your milk of choice on its own.
  • No skills required. This recipe is as easy as heating chocolate and milk on the stove or in a microwave.
  • Almost instant gratification. Once the chocolate and milk are gently heated, your drink is ready to enjoy!
  • Scale it up or down. This recipe can easily be made for one person or multiple people. Keep it warm in a crockpot or Instant pot for a holiday gathering!

INGREDIENTS AND SUBSTITUTIONS

  • Chocolate: milk, semi-sweet or dark chocolate will all work well. I recommend using a type of chocolate that you enjoy eating on its own. High quality chocolate bars will melt easier than lower quality chocolate chips, which tend to have more fillers. However, with gentle heat the chocolate will eventually melt with the milk. If the chocolate has a candy coating or other things already mixed into it (like nuts), I would not recommend using it because the chocolate will not melt smoothly and you will end up with unappealing textures in your drink.
  • Milk: This recipe calls for whole milk, however feel free to use any milk you enjoy drinking. Note that some milks may not taste as delicious warm as they do cold.
  • Water: The water is optional in this recipe. You can use it to thin out the drink a bit or leave it out entirely. Instead of heating the milk and chocolate together, you can also pour hot water directly over the chocolate to melt it first and then add it to the milk and warm it further.

Two Ingredient Hot Chocolate

A simple recipe for hot chocolate using just two ingredients: real chocolate and milk!
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 2

Equipment

  • 1 small (1 quart) saucepan or large heatproof measuring cup

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (85 grams) chocolate, chopped or chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup water optional

Instructions

  • Combine the chopped chocolate and milk in a small saucepan or heatproof measuring cup. Add the additional water if you want the hot chocolate to be a bit less rich.
  • Heat the saucepan on the stove over medium low heat, stirring until the chocolate melts and the milk is heated through.
If using a heatproof measuring cup, heat in the microwave for 1 minute intervals, stirring in between until the chocolate melts and milk is heated through.
Alternatively, heat some water in a kettle. Pour 1/2 cup of the hot water over the chocolate and stir to melt. Then add the milk to the melted chocolate and heat until warm in a saucepan on the stove or in a heatproof measuring cup in the microwave.
  • Divide between two cups (or one giant mug!) and serve.

Notes

Alternative milks: Lower fat content milk or non-dairy milk alternatives will work with this recipe.  Just note that the flavor and thickness of the resulting hot chocolate will vary depending on what milk is used.  To make the hot chocolate vegan, make sure to use non-dairy chocolate chips as well as non-dairy milk.
Scaling the recipe: You can scale this recipe up to feed a larger crowd.  Simply use 1/4 cup chopped chocolate or chocolate chips per cup of milk, plus an additional 1/4 cup of water if desired.  You could even combine the milk and chocolate (and water, if using) in a crockpot to melt it all together on low and then switch it to warm.
